I have been lurking on this forum for some time and decided to sign up after bumping into a post that has impacted me in a certain way.

Anyways! I am 23 years old and I am deaf. My whole family is hearing and I am able to communicate with both deaf and hearing individuals, regardless of my deafness.

You see, I wear hearing aids. Without them, I hear nothing. With them, I hear nearly everything nearby with exception of conversations. However, not many knows how I have managed to carry on a conversation with hearing individuals. Through years of interaction with hearing people, I am able to lip read and I use sounds to distinguish words that makes sense the most in a sentence. Thus, this allows me to communicate physically with nearly anyone. Except those with accents of course, which are plentiful in university settings!

What I said above probably revealed that I also go to university. I am an electrical engineering student myself, however, I already graduated as an engineering technologist. My wishes to pursue higher education is simple, to pursue challenges and to prove many, wrong. Attending a hearing university with a minimum of 10,000 full-time students while I am the only deaf person that represents the whole university is certainly interesting right?

Or are you surprised? Well, here in Ontario, many of my deaf friends are on government assistance. They earn at least $1000 a month, it is sufficient for them to support themselves and raise a family without having to work in their lifetime. This gave me another reason to pursue higher learning to prove that they can also do this. To accomplish something that many people thought they cannot accomplish.

Well, there, I have introduce myself, little of who I am and a bit of rambling there and there. :P I look forward reading some interesting threads to come and meeting some awesome people here.

Cheers!

You arent the only one. I graduated from Arizona State University which had a population of about 45K students. Yes, I am profoundly deaf since birth.
