It seems so very long ago
My hearing gone, I did not know
My learning curve started to slow
Examinations, what a blow
It's very hard to understand
The trials of this lonely man

At work they said I have to go
They did not care even though
Everything I did was always good
My boss, my peers misunderstood
And did not try to understand
The hardship of this lonely man

Now at home I cry and pray
Now my family on my mind
When they come home what do I say
I just keep waiting for the right day
Which never seems to come my way
I wonder if they will understand
What happened to this lonely man

I want to run, I want to hide
Keep thinking of my foolish pride
I want to express what I feel inside
Prove to myself I am still a man
And hope that they will understand
The pressure on this lonely man

As time moved on throughout the fight
I knew that I was doing right
I won you know and through it all
My family stood behind me
They now knew what I'd been through
So it was not hard for them to understand
What happened to this lonely man

Still afraid to go outside
I stay indoors no where to hide
My freedom lost I must confess
It's hard to explain, I'll do my best
This is what happens when nothing you hear
This is what happens when always you fear
It's hard to explain and to understand
When all you are is a lonely man

I prayed, please God look over me
Please give me strength and set me free
He gave to me a new best friend
One who loves me one times ten
A canine friend who hears for me
Just what I needed to set me free
My heart soared upward you understand
And now I'm not a lonely man

We stay together twenty-four, seven
Being with her is just like heaven
No longer I want to run and hide
We spend a lot of time outside
Rediscovering nature is a lot of fun
My canine friend likes to play and run
I thank you God for my new best friend
The key unlocking this now happy man

Now what's next, 'Sign Language' I see
This may be a little difficult for me
But I will strive to understand
It's time to improve this old man
I thank you God for being there;
For listening fo me;
For setting me free
Your love has really helped me through
All the things I've had to do
And now I stand a happy man

Those who read this all should know
Have faith in God and you will grow
When trouble fills your very air
God himself will be right there
And all you have to do is ask
He will help you with your task
As he did with me and I'll forge on
Now with God and my new best friend
I'll carry on to the very end.

This is a really good poem. Did you write it? If so, when did you become deaf if this poem is about you and your life? It's amazing how having a dog can make difference in life as well as God! We just got a cute 7 weeks old black dashound puppy yesterday and it had kept everyone in my family busy. So much fun playing with it!

Peachy Lady, thank you for your comments.

Yes, this poem is about me and my life todate. And, I did write it. My deafness is work related and happened in the mid 1980's.

My Guide Dog 'Neo' is the first dog ever to be paid for by Ontario Worker's Compensation (part of the fight) and, as far as I know, at the time when I won she was the only 'Hearing Ear Dog Guide' in Canada to be paid for by the Government.

Before Neo, I almost got hit by a bus and a large truck. I cannot hear and therefore it was very easy for me to get hurt so I stayed inside where it is safe.

Neo changed all of that.

Wow, very good poem you create there, I know I go thru my days having a hard time dealing with my own deafness, and having people misunderstood us which cause us to lose our jobs, yet the way you written that poem makes others feel better about themselves, as it does to me....

So Thank you for sharing it with us....Keep writing because you can make others feel your pain as you write the words in your poems and it can open people eyes on things that they never knew.....
