Third fatal San Antonio blaze in two weeks leaves three dead | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
Three people, including a 5-year-old girl, were killed early Friday in the third fatal house fire here in the last two weeks.
A fourth person was hospitalized in critical condition.
Fire officials said the victims, who weren't identified, included a 55-year-old woman, a 47-year-old woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter. Both of the women were deaf.
A 47-year-old deaf man and a 20-year-old woman escaped the fire that also injured a 57-year-old deaf woman. She suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center.
The fire came two weeks after former state Sen. Frank Madla, his mother-in-law and granddaughter were killed in a fire at his home. A day later, an 89-year-old man was killed in a house fire.
San Antonio fire officials said Friday's fire started about 4 a.m., but a 911 call was not made for nearly 20 minutes.
The delay, Fire Department officials said, may have been because the man who escaped the burning house could not hear or speak and had to use sign language to get a neighbor to call for help.
District Fire Chief Randy Jenkins said the home, which he said was not believed to be a group home, didn't have smoke detectors, and the windows were covered with burglar bars.
"Keep in mind that two of the victims were not hearing-impaired," Jenkins said. "The 20-year-old female that survived, as well as the 5-year-old child, who did not survive, they were not hearing-impaired. So it's possible that an ordinary smoke detector could have made a difference."
Investigators said it was unclear what caused the pre-dawn fire. A space heater was running in the kitchen, and a barbecue pit in a back living room was lit in an effort to keep a newborn litter of pit bull puppies warm.
"They were trying to keep the dogs warm with charcoal briquettes," Jenkins said. "The dog could've tipped it over. We don't know at this time."

My friend showed me pictures of the burnt down house on her sidekick...sad.
