New York Daily News - Movie Reviews - Short Takes

Drama about the relationship between a deaf nurse and a blind patient. At the Quad (1:55). Not rated: Language, brief nudity.

A nearly deaf European factory worker (Sarah Polley) with a mysterious past volunteers to care for an American engineer (Tim Robbins) who has been temporarily blinded in an oil rig accident in the North Sea. That is the simple setup of writer-director Isabel Coixet's complex study of emotional communication.

Both nurse and patient harbor some deep and painful secrets. Given the physical limitations of their characters, Polley and Robbins give remarkably compelling performances, and though the resolution of their slowly evolving relationship is a bit too pat, it is one you won't soon forget.
