Currently a small group of deaf or hard of hearing people nominated by DeafSA are testing subtitling software on the DStv PVR (personal video recorder). They form part of a field trial before final review of subtitling software is released to the broader customer base.

The trialists provide feedback via SMS to the technical team on how they experience the subtitling option and what works and what needs to be adjusted. The technical team can then come up with solutions. Subtitling is already available on some of the popular channels like M-Net Movies 1 and M-Net Movies II.

MultiChoice will release software for subtitling functionalities during October.

The MultiChoice call centre is also currently working on a SMS system whereby the deaf or hard of hearing customer may contact the call centre and receive support from the staff who are capable of understanding their concerns as well as being able to help them.

For most customers making a telephone call to the call centre is an easy task, but if you are deaf it is impossible. Another difficulty for deaf customers is watching programming that they can understand and enjoy, something that is enabled by subtitling.

Says Jackie Rakita GM: Corporate Affairs “Our interactions with the deaf and hard of hearing community imparted valuable information as well as a greater understanding of the daily hurdles that they face.”
