The Deaf Are Heard - Couric & Co.

One of the most compelling and unusual "freeSpeech" segments was broadcast Friday, when LaToya Plummer used sign language to articulate her message about deafness in America. You can see the segment by clicking the monitor on the left.

The segment was prompted by the controversy surrounding Gallaudet University's selection of provost Jane K. Fernandes to be the president of America's premier school for the deaf. The appointment led to protests around the school -- and even sharp disagreements about why people were protesting.

Finally, over the weekend, Gallaudet's board rescinded Fernandes' appointment.
