Albany, NY (AHN) - For the blind and deaf, enjoying movies in theaters with the rest of the population has been impossible. Now technology is making it possible.
For the hearing impaired there is deaf-captioning technology, hearing devices more compatible with hearing aids, or Rear Window captioning, in which hearing disabled customers can use an acrylic panel to read captioning projected from the back of the theater. For the blind, technology provides headsets that offer descriptive narration of films.
According to the nonprofit National Center for Accessible Media, more than 150 movie theaters have added special systems to help the deaf, hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired Nationwide.
Many of the newly accessible theaters are in major cities that made the move voluntarily and some have done so under pressure. Some states have threatened, or have, filed discrimination lawsuits for those who do not make the technology available.
