Gateshead’s Ian Mearns is backing the National Deaf Children’s Society’s Stolen Futures campaign, which calls for a parliamentary debate about protecting specialist services.
He said: “Deaf children must be heard in the debate about funding cuts for vulnerable learners.
“I strongly support a Parliamentary debate to shine a spotlight on this key issue and have a particular concern for services in North East authorities which we know have been disproportionately hit by Government cuts.”
Susan Daniels, chief executive at NDCS, said: “We are concerned that specialist support for deaf children continues to be at risk.
“Services such as Teachers of the Deaf are not a luxury, they are absolutely vital.
“We are calling on the Government to hold councils to account.”
