What are the benefits of owning one of these and what kinds of things do they allow you to do? Are they worth the hype? What does everyone here like for tablets/iPads?

Laura

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. It enables me to read any book in large print format.

That's my favorite part of it.

I have a NOOK HD+ tablet. I read any digital comic book, digital magazines but, no full googles store app.. Grr, I'll think of buy iPad mini later.

To be honest, I use my laptop more than my tablet. A tablet cool for taking on a bike trip or to the beach when a laptop would be bulky. They can do anything a laptop can do.

The only thing I don't like about them is that they are not as upgradable as a laptop and will at some point be obsolete. I don't like to buy equipment that can't last.

I was thinking why use a tablet when a smart phone does it all these days? I would rather haul around a 6 inch smart phone rather than a tablet. I am looking to cut off my internet service and rely on the phone. Get a signal booster for better reception at home and I would be set up.
But if you feel the need to be cool the tablet is for you

I love travelling with my iPad. I put games on it and a bunch of cool other apps and can use the internet as long as I have wifi of course. It's easier to carry around vs my laptop. For reading I have a kobo as I can't read on the iPad for long periods of time cuz it strains my eyes more. I LOVE my kobo e-reader it's awesome:)

Each person's usage may vary, so a reprensentative view of the actual value may differ by each person. The main purpose of it is lightweight tech consumption - I am defining consuming as intake, not output. Whether social apps, books, articles, news, email, websites. Second alternative are for hands-on with app usage from games, photography/video, various utilities.

They are not exactly geared for serious output (production) where you do any writing past a few sentences, unless you have the additional accessories. There are exceptions to this statement of course, like the Asus Transformer series are meant to be a light laptop replacement, or third-party keyboard add-ons in other devices.
Are they worth the hype?
This is going to be relative to your use... If you can, try borrowing one for 1-2 weeks if possible before making the buy to see if a tablet is worth it for you. Just my :2c:.

Root it and you will be able to get the store or add any working apk.

I've always wondered, what exactly is an app? Are they free?

App is short for application, a form of software. I think the term was first used for those written for smartphones.

Some are free and others have a cost.

I have the Kobo too (though not the latest version). I just wanted something to read books on and that allowed me to download borrowed books from the library. At the time I got it (2 years ago), it was one of the few that you could use for library eBooks.

I have used iPad 3 for more one year and I love it very much! :)

I sold my ipad 1 right after I bought Macbook PRO. I find Macbook PRO very beneficial, and useful. I might get ipad mini with retina.

When I had iPad 1, I subscribed many free magazines (national geo (photos/videos), autoweek, PEOPLE, etc, comics, and sport illustrated. I enjoy reading book on ipad 1 in the dark like travel in car at night times, or read few chapters before going to bed. iPad is great for reading, web surfing. I do not play games on iPad at all.

There are ALOT of free apps that you can take advantage of without having to pay. But if you want to pay without using a visa you can get those iTunes gift cards at the pharmacy..they're usually with all the other gift cards you can select as gifts. You can buy an iTunes gift card for yourself and just use that to buy an app. Or ask for one for a special occasion :) I get my lil cousins the iTunes gift cards for their bdays or xmas for their iPods.

what my understanding, remember it is a bad jok. OK italian peeps would rather use easy to understand how to use it. so its apple so ipad2 is better. :)

Rooting may void my warranty. pssh!

Only if you make a huge mistake in directions, or if you told them you rooted it. ;)
I won't tell you to root it for sure!
But warranty, no worry. It is not a scary thing, it's less scary than jailbreak - no one can tell if it is rooted.

No one tell if it is jailbroken after you restore the iOS with original firmware.

In bold - yup, I already did jailbroken multiple times. I believe Apple is trying to make it harder for iOS 6.x due to require cable now.

I have both an iPhone and iPad. I love how my apps show up on both devices automatically.

I'll have to look into this more. Right now I'm trying to justify the purchase. If you have a desktop and a laptop, why does anyone need a tablet? For the moment, the most critical thing I need to is to get a working cellphone that is deaf friendly. I need something with a loud speaker phone, easy keyboard for texting and, God willing, a light to alert me to incoming calls. I don't always have the phone on me to feel any vibrations. If I do decide to try a tablet, I've been hearing good things about the iPad so I might explore this more. There's an Apple store at my local mall so I'm sure anyone of the employees could show me some of the features....if I can justify the expense....thanks for the feedback folks.
