Sue Parkin, 53, of Sandal Cliff, undertook a gruelling 10-day trek across China and raised over £2,400 for the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS).

She said: "I came across an advert out of the blue asking people to trek across China for deaf children. I used to teach music as well as physics and I could not imagine not being able to enjoy music."

She added: "This was a real personal challenge for me. It was hard work walking up to eight hours a day in extreme conditions.
"I don't think I realised how hard it would be and it really pushed me to the limit but that's what I wanted.

Mrs Parkin returned to the UK last week and now hopes the money she raised during her mammoth trek will help deaf children and their families.

She said: "The whole thing was such an adventure and I am really delighted to have raised money for deaf children and their families across the UK.
"The amount I raised could provide a cochlear implant, giving a deaf child the opportunity to speak and hear."

Mrs Parkin revealed that she has also just completed a life coaching diploma and is training in leadership in a bid to help people take control of their lives.
She said: "I feel younger than I did 10 years ago and I can't ever see myself stopping now.

"What I would like is for people to realise what they can achieve if they put their mind to it."
