Successful exhibition by Servite's deaf ‘artists’ | 24dash.com - Social Housing

A successful exhibition of artworks by Servite’s Deaf residents has seen more than half the exhibits sold and raised almost £1,000.

The residents, who live in supported housing in Wandsworth, were joined by Servite Houses staff, Wandsworth Council representatives, friends and relatives at a private view of the ‘Language in the Hands’ exhibition at Putney Arts Theatre SW15 last week to celebrate the results of the popular art club.

Exhibition organiser and Servite occupational activities officer James Wengraf-Townsend said the money raised from sales will be given back to the residents’ association to pay for more activities.

Seven months of classes at Servite’s John Morris Community Centre, in Wandsworth, have now come to an end. But Servite’s supported housing staff are determined to find funding to bring the classes back because they have had such a positive impact on the residents, many of whom have mental health support needs.

Course facilitator Fiona McLean said: “Working with the residents has been fantastic; the workshops have given a boost to their confidence and wellbeing.”

The mosaics, paintings, tiles and sculptures have been on display from June 5 to June 13.
