hi there, im a deaf cultures student and i am looking for a deaf person to interview via e-mail. it's about 7-8 questions, from who you are to your views on the deaf community.

please respond to this thread or via e-mail at mileman77@me.com

thanks!

I am deaf. I told my hearing girlfriend that my ears are retarded. She said, please don't say that!! Your ears are beautiful.

re

thats a very beautiful thing to say! would you be willing to be interviewed? it won't take much time

1. what has been your families communication background, and has it changed?
are your parents/siblings also deaf?

2. what is your preferred mode of communication, and what works best in the world outside of the deaf community?

3. what is your educational background, as well as your parents/siblings?
Educational background

4. if you use ASL, when was the first time you used it?

5. what are your community ties? where do you feel you most belong?

6. what is your work background and do you feel there are communication issues there?

and lastly do you have any particular stories you would like to share about being deaf.

Here is an example:

I go out with my hearing girlfriend. I have dated hearing people in the past. I don't mind if they interpret for me when we go to restaurant or maybe at getting tickets at botanic garden. I've enough self esteem to know that if I go out on my own that I can write down my order or that I want tickets at botanic garden. It's just much easier to have my girlfriend interpret and she is always happy to interpret.

When I was in a college, I had a deaf roommate that always insists that he order himself!! He did NOT want any help from his hearing dates placing order in restaurant or bar.

I guess it is up to each person on whether they want help interpreting or do it themselves.
