Officials say Stroger Hospital will enhance services for the deaf and hearing-impaired under an agreement with the U-S Attorney's office.
The agreement announced yesterday is the result of an investigation into the hospital's compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
That investigation was sparked by a complaint filed by a deaf woman who claims she had to wait six hours for an interpreter after going to Stroger's emergency room in May 2003.
The hospital also has agreed to pay the woman 75-hundred dollars in damages.
Under the agreement, Stroger must call a sign language interpreter within ten minutes of a patient's request.
Officials say the hospital has been fitted with text telephones and personnel are being trained on dealing with the hearing impaired.
