A deaf dog taken from the Placer County SPCA has been returned safe and sound.

The shelter said a homeless man knew "Dodger's" whereabouts and contacted authorities Wednesday after reading a newspaper story about the dog. The story reported how the SPCA's Humane Educator Mary Terrell was planning to adopt Dodger as a companion and to teach children lessons on tolerance and overcoming adversity. The man told authorities the story really touched him. "He told us that he was a Vietnam vet and that he wanted to do the right thing, that there were many things that he hadn't done right. At the time he called he said he didn't want the reward. He just wanted a room to stay in or a meal," said Leilani Vierra, Placer County SPCA Chief Executive Officer.

Dodger was taken sometime Sunday evening or early Monday morning, according to the SPCA. A worker arrived early Monday to find Dodger's cage door open.

Other than being dirty, Dodger is in good shape. Special needs dogs like him need to learn a form of sign language to help them communicate. They also need special vibrating collars to help them know when they are being called or may be at risk from traffic or something else.
