The Board of Directors and staff of St. John’s School for Deaf on 1 December 2005 inaugurated a D3m rehabilitated and upgraded school building at Kanifing South.

The objective of the project is “to enable admissions into Senior and Secondary Education for many qualifying deaf students waiting for an opportunity, as the existing facility did not cater for the basic requirements of the school.”

According to Mrs Ashyme Saine, Communications Officer for GAMWOARKS, the project was financed by the world Bank/International Development Association (IDA) and the Government of The Gambia, through the Poverty Alleviation and Capacity Building Project.

“GAMWORKS was responsible for the implementation of the project. The Design Consultant hired by GAMWORKS was Master Plan and the Contractor was Medura Construction,” she added.

In his opening remarks, Mr Amadou Touray, the Chairman of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and the Public Relations Officer of GAMTEL, said the project had been initiated four years ago but due to some circumstances beyond their control, they could not go ahead with it. He commended GAMWORKS, AFRICEL, KMC and other donors in Europe for supporting the construction of the new school building.

Mr Touray also called on the public, Parastatals and private institutions to employ deaf and handicapped graduates from high school, saying that they have proven to be very intelligent and hardworking. “Let’s help them to play their role in society and to display their talents,” he added.

For his part, the Principal of the school, Daniel J. Mendy, said the idea behind the construction of the first floor dates back to 2000, when his predecessor, Mr John Jatta, was still in Office. “ He [Mr John Jatta] succeeded in securing the 10% local beneficiary contribution as required by GAMWORKS, through the generosity of our Danish philanthropist (Ms Awa Gundrun Jorsing), but work could not commence due to unavoidable circumstances, “ he said.

He thanked AFRICEL for supporting them in bringing the project to completion. “The structure comprises a hall, the vice principal’s office, a computer lab, a tailoring room, while the rest of the rooms will be used as classrooms and a would-be science lab,” he explained.

The principal also called for more support towards the school, saying “some of the staff require training to become specialist teachers in deaf education, as the present capacity is found wanting in many respects.”

Mrs Awa John-Ceesay, Director of Education, Region 1, deputizing for the Secretary of State for Education, said the government’s New Education Policy (2005 –2015) focuses on accesses and quality education for all. She added that the Education Department would always cooperate with and assist the school in its endeavours.

Other speakers at the occasion included Mr Emil Kujabi from the Catholic Education Secretariat, and the Secretary General of the Gambia Teachers’ Union.
