Slow file copy/delete/move on vista

Ever since I brought this new computer Dell XPS 420, in Jan, that cames with Vista Ultimate, the copying, deleting, moving LARGE amount of files (I am talking about 50K of files and many are over 1GB) is PAINFULLY slow compared to XP.. Vista SP1 still doesn't improves or fix this issue.. it feels like it is 10 times (at least) slower than XP..... Anyone figured out this issue?

I would LOVE to go back to XP, but lack of official drivers by DELL make this difficult. I have tried unofficial drivers and got XP working before, but it make my XP too unstable. Only things I love about Vista is Video functionality for dual screen (i can use both screen for video at same time that I was never able to do under XP) and its search functionality too.

i have tried robocopy and no real difference in speed. I discovered last night the Allway Sync, this thing ROCKS for syncing backups to my 360G mini HD but still slow but major improvement since it only COPY changes/new files to HD. I have always in the past, that I delete backup folders and recopy to external drive to refresh backups.

If anyone got XPS 420 running stable on XP or know how to fix this stupid file copy "slowness" on vista. Let me know!
 
Interesting! I WISH I had Vista to learn how to hack it to get it speed up. LOL. Have you tried Google search to find solutions on how to fix that file trasnfer slowness?

Yeah, none of these workaround worked for me.. It is well known issue..

Vista SP1 fixed the file transfer speed network. Did you know that?

I just wonder why you don't built your own computer?

Nope SP1 didn't fix it, it still take LONG time to transfer.. In fact, I moved a folder, that has over 20,000 files, within same partition, it tooks about 5 minutes when XP would take few seconds.

As for building my own computer, I used to for many years, but it is cheaper to get whole computer than building by parts. XPS-420 is very nicely built by Dell plus I got over 20% discount going thru my company plus next day part replacement warranty are bonus.
 
I had same problem about transfer few GB files via Firewire 400 on Vista without SP, it took 10 minutes but XP took about 2-3 minutes.

I haven't test on SP1.

If your issue isn't solve then make partition and install Linux or XP on your PC or getting Mac based computers.

How about call Dell to send XP drivers CD?

Install Windows OS on brand compuuters isn't easy because of need find drivers, that's make me so frustration with previous ASUS laptop.

Network is solve the issue for me now but usb, firewall and sata still issue.

I don't really care about cheap, low price computers, because of limitations in hardware, driver, and bios system. I see you have trouble with drivers for Window XP. Good luck

This is not a cheap system - It was top of line when I brought it and handles Media and many applications damn nicely than my old built overclocked 3.6Ghz CPU (before dual core came out). I am hooked to two 22" Dell LCD monitors as well.

I doubt you can build system as good as this without paying more than this system (remember I had deep discount at work). I paid less than $1200 in late December for:

2.4Ghz Quad Core CPU
GeForce 8800
4GB RAM
1TB Drive
BluRay Writer
3 years Next Business day warranty

I have few dell desktops and couple servers at work including Dell laptops and I am very happy with it.. Great support. Just only complain is lack of older OS drivers support.

I am sure I probably could get installed with Linux then use Virtual Machine to run XP/Vista but I haven't tried it yet.

No worries... I don't get offended that easily.. :) At today price, yeah. Probably quite more back in Dec 2007. Computer prices drop fast whenever newer items comes out. I remember it was over $1500 if home-made build.

5 years warranty is pretty much standard for most stuff, but from my experence, its alot hassle to deal with multi manuf. I remember I had to get HD replaced under warranty which took me good 2 weeks to get it replaced.. Motherboard is even worse - I never saw my $300 Asus MB again when I sent it out for warranty service years ago.. Asus are GREAT product but warranty sucks. No thanks, I rather get my computer back up and running quickly as possible.

As BIOS, they are reasonable flexible for most parts, but no overclocking and few advanced options. Its good nuff for most OS. However, I just found XP drivers at XPS 420 XP Drivers (This is not supported by Dell) - XPS Desktops - Dell Community Forum but it is "unofficial" which I am going to try that later this week.

I knew you said about price drop thing.

I understand about hassle hardware. Happen to my friends before. Never happen to me before so I must be lucky sometime I am not in mood to RMA and just got new hardware if my hardware is over year old.

I never spend more than $150 for mb. It's joke and all mobo are same for speed from test but just price and come with wifi, best heatsink,chipset, quad SLI, etc.. that I don't need. I can mod mb way better than $300. My coworker's friend have same with MB. His friend use MB $300 for 3 months then died. Coworker got mobo for $50 and work great for over year. His friend got pissed off. That's funny.
 
I have no problem with the full version vista os.. I believe that your dell softwares cause vista issues. thats why I hate any functional software own by compaq, hp, dell, ace are merger with vista window os. I always erased window os included the functional brand softwares from laptop and put the full version window os on it. Then I have to download some drivers for laptop hardware such modem, touchpad, videocard, others as require. thats simple..
 
Yeah.. That is my standard operating practice to reinstall clean copy into new system. No recovery CD crap or anything like that.

I have no issue with performance with my Dell computer, it is just well known issue on Vista when it comes to disk copy/move/delete functionality, not limited to Dell. I was hoping SP1 would fixes it, but unforunately not the case (not that I noticed).

Ouch!

I sure hope that driver from Dell better fix that dang thing. Wish they had it ready year ago before vista came out. I belived it's a drive chipset driver issue that vista have. I think did remember one system had plm with XP system with slow file transfer. I decide to figure out why. Until I spotted yellow caution sign in Hardware manager. I decide to update driver. It turned out it's unavailable. So I had to search mobo's manufacter driver. It was pretty tricky cuz it was Legency mobo. Found out it's a obsolete Elitegroup mobo. So I managed to track driver and download it. ( I downloaded all drivers better safe than sorry lol). I installed driver and finally caution sign disappeared and drive chipset was reconized. I decide to try file transfer. It was quick.

I would agree that Dell or some mobo manufacter are running behind on drivers. I'm sure they'll be out soon as they fixed the programming in driver.

Thanks for all info to keep me head up for issue. I would use that to let friends know if they had issue.

Yeah.. no recovery CD? Did you call dell for order the recovery CD as the replacement..?

Wait a min.. Let me step back, did you burn CD copied the recovery thru the system restore or somewhere.. Because my fiancee recently got her own new compaq laptop few days ago. I realized that there is no recovery CD in box. but i read compaq manual book says I can make copy it thru the recovery from the system restore or somewhere hdd.. I can't recall.. So I did made three DVD CD copying from laptop's recovery software for her as in case if laptop is breakdown or something.. wow it is technology software.. there is no longer for recovery CD.. the recovery inside comptuer or laptop that already.. wow..

I hope you fix your computer as solve asap..
