SLED Investigating School For Deaf, Blind - News Story - WHNS Greenville

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said they are investigating criminal allegations made against a school employee at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.

The announcement comes just three days after the school’s president, Dr. Pamela C. Shaw, turned in her resignation.

Since Shaw became president in January of 2008, investigators say two criminal acts have occurred on the school campus.

In February, investigators said a 21-year-old student at the school admitted to sexually assaulting another student. In March, a man was arrested after investigators said he brought a gun on campus and threatened to kill a school employee.

Neither SLED nor school officials would comment if either incident is part of this joint investigation.

Shaw resigned after only seven months of acting as president of the school.

A source close to the investigation told FOX Carolina that SLED usually becomes involved when a case has to do with how an employee handled a specific criminal matter, or in the event that an employee is accused of committing a crime.

A special meeting was called by the school’s Board of Commissioners on Friday in Columbia. The announcement of Shaw’s resignation followed the meeting.

Neither the school nor Shaw’s attorney will give any details surrounding her resignation or comment on the nature of this investigation.

The school’s Board of Commissioners issued the following statement:

The Board of Commissioners is appreciative to Dr. Shaw for the contributions she has made to the agency and wishes her well in future endeavors.

Shaw will continue to serve as President of The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind until Aug. 29. Carol Mabry, who’s currently the vice president of outreach services will serve as interim president of the school until a new one can be hired.
