I just finished reading the article about the deaf man who was robbed by his so-called friends. ("Deaf man abandoned by "friends' is home safe, thanks to cops," June 18.) It's a sad story, yet the officers from Seaside Heights Police Department, specifically Detective Steve Korman and Sgt. Thomas Grzywinski, brought this one to a happy ending.

Korman knew some sign language because he has a child with a neurological disorder who cannot speak. I, too, have a son with a neurological disorder and he is also unable to speak. I bought lots of books and DVDs on sign language, and even took a class through the Manchester Adult Education program.

It would be wonderful if more people would learn this language, especially law enforcement officers and rescue personnel. It would help if all their vehicles were equipped with a sign language book. You never know when it will come in handy.

I worry that some day my son will be in need of help and no one will be able to understand him. Again, I applaud the efforts of these two police officers.
