A HIGH Wycombe charity for deaf youngsters has welcomed a £7,000 cash donation which will help it teach sign language for the rest of the year.

Young Deaf Activities, which is based at East Side Youth Centre in Highcrest School, received the money on Saturday from the Buckinghamshire Foundation.

The charity covers the whole of the county and will use the money to fund teachers who visit families at home to teach sign language. Parents of deaf children and their siblings can also be taught the language in a bid to improve communication and their family life.

The cheque was handed over by trustee of the foundation, Guy Birksby.

Stuart Lee, 60, treasurer of the charity which meets fortnightly in Hatters Lane, said: "It is so important that when children are in a family they can talk to the family and talk to the siblings and when they are deaf it is very tough and can be frustrating.

"So if we can teach children and families to sign it will help them to participate.

"Donations and grants are always very helpful to us. We have an income of around £30,000 which is used to fund activities at the youth club, home communications, summer schools for children and at Easter time and other holidays things also cost money." The charity aims to encourage deaf youngsters to take part in activities in the wider community.
