I imagine that this will wind up in both civil and criminal courts before '07 is over. Two kids don't have a mom because of some stupid contest for a gaming console system. This has $$$ written all over it.

As participants in KDND-FM's water-drinking contest chugged bottle after bottle, a listener called in to warn the disc jockeys that the stunt could be fatal.

"Yeah, we're aware of that," one of them responded.

Another DJ said with a laugh: "Yeah, they signed releases, so we're not responsible. We're OK."

Those comments, and others made during the Jan. 12 "Morning Rave" radio show, appeared to give little regard to the risk of water intoxication. But just hours after the contest, a woman who guzzled nearly two gallons was dead.

On Wednesday, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department launched a criminal investigation into the incident, and attorneys for the family of Jennifer Lea Strange said they plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the radio station.

The county coroner said preliminary autopsy findings indicate Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three, died of water intoxication.

Authorities decided to pursue the investigation after listening to a tape of the show, obtained by The Sacramento Bee, during which DJs joked about the possible dangers of consuming too much water, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said. At one point, the DJs even alluded to a college student who died during a similar stunt in 2005.

Strange was one of about 18 contestants who tried to win a Nintendo Wii gaming console by determining how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom.

Several hours into the contest, Strange was interviewed on the air and complained that her head hurt.

"They keep telling me that it's the water. That it will tell my head to hurt and then it will make me puke," she said.

Eventually, Strange gave in and accepted the second-place prize: tickets to a Justin Timberlake concert. She commented that she looked pregnant, and a female DJ agreed.

"Oh, my gosh, look at that belly. That's full of water. ... Come on over, Jennifer, you OK?" a male DJ asked. "You going to pass out right now? Too much water?"

Several hours later, Strange was found dead in her home.

On Tuesday, KDND's parent company, Entercom/Sacramento, fired 10 employees connected to the contest, including three morning disc jockeys. The company also took the morning show off the air.

Station spokesman Charles Sipkins said Wednesday the company had not yet heard from the sheriff's department but that it would cooperate with the investigation.

This goes to prove holding your " bathroom water " is not a very good idea and can be very fatal.

I am sorry to read that their family lost a precious daughter. I hope they sue the hell out of that radio station.

Family sues radio station in Wii contest death

Family sues radio station in Wii contest death

The family of a California woman who died after participating in a radio station's water-drinking contest to win a Nintendo Wii will sue the station, their lawyer said on Thursday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, a mother of three, died from suspected water intoxication after taking part in Friday's competition, "Hold Your Wee for a Wii." About 20 people tried to out-drink each other without going to the bathroom.

Sacramento station KDND-FM responded by firing 10 staffers, including several DJs, and canceling the Morning Rave program. The DJs had joked about people dying from water intoxication and teased Strange about her distended stomach.

"The station knew this was a dangerous and potentially deadly stunt, but flippantly dismissed the dangers," lawyer Roger Dreyer said in a statement. "Hearing the tape (of the radio show), it's very clear they knew of the dangers and could foresee that this could lead to Jennifer's death."

The station could not be reached for comment because its phone number was continuously engaged Thursday evening.

Police are also investigating the death for possible criminal charges.

An excess of water in the body can lead to the dilution of vital fluids. That in turn can lead to swelling of the brain, seizures, comas, an irregular heartbeat and in some cases death.

:ugh3: :-o

Me and my mom's prayers and thoughts go to her wife and her family.

well good for the family!!! Its radio's fault for the mother's death. If they want to have contest, research first before set up the contest. idiots ppl.

the contest was pretty stupid...of course someone would get hurt by drinking too much water.

I am really shocking about the mother of the kids died from drinking lot of waters for contest from radio. I feel that the radio is idiot and do nothing to know about the health cautious and think it is not important and it is for fun to be in contest to win prizes. Come on, radio show what is wrong with your brain! The Radio show is in big TROUBLE with the criminal law no matter if he thinks it is for fun and not really important on health issues. Wow what a shame on that radio!!! The radio show will lost business someday when the family will sue a lawsuit against the radio for causing death of mother!

What a mercy on mother of the kids who is innocent and do not know much about health issues.

I remember that few times I had to drink lot of water and went to restroom forth and back because I have to lost my weight and do clean up in my body before seeing doctor. I remember my brain is aching two times and feel like it is float in my body. Till I heard about the mother of kids dead from that water too much... I know what it looks like in brain aching!

She deserves a Darwin Award and her kids deserve a Wii. I think she won.

Here death had nothing to do with her holding her urine. She died from water intoxication from consuming too much water in such a short time. It flooded her brain and depleted her electrolytes.

I think the kids lost more than just a Wii.

So, what you are saying is that because someone does't possess a certain amount of intelligence, they deserve to die at the hands of a bunch of jerks like the DJs? That it's okay to take advantage of someone knowing that you could cause grave harm?

Dude, you're despicable. Someone died and you make a joke of it? You're as bad as those DJs.

My friend witnessed a kid get ran over, died on impact. 2 teenagers got out and joked how he got 'deaded'. The moron ran a red light and my friend was 1 car behind the car that gunned the light. What the hell is it with kids today? I guess they're all screwed up and desensized from videogames and movies. What if it was your mother and someone joked about how she should win the darwin award or maybe someone close to you. Let's see you joke about that.

:eek3: I'm addict to drink a lot of water....

Yes I can see that what a mother did is an extreme. I feel bad for her children for lose their mother to contest... :(

While I'm not saying people deserve to die and I also care nothing for the DJ or radio station...people do stupid crap! Why Oh why is it that everyone wants to pass the buck when clearly it was the individuals fault. She didn't have to do this, they weren't twisting her arm. I feel bad for her family not only because she died but because she was stupid, yes their mother was stupid. And stupid hurts, in this case kills.

Oh please, those DJ's pushed her into it. Any real mother will go to extreme lengths for her children's happiness and the DJ's took advantage of that for their own amusement. They should be held criminally and civilly culpable for their actions.
