Man Shows Up While Reporter Talking With Neighbors
LOS ANGELES -- A Southern California registered sex offender who cut off his ankle monitor turned himself in Thursday morning on live TV.
Valentino Rodriguez walked up to KTLA reporter Eric Spillman during the morning news and announced his intentions.
"To turn myself in, to do the appropriate thing," Rodriguez said. "And go ahead an man up about it."
Rodriguez is a high-risk sex offender, doing prison time in 2001 for molesting a child. He was let go a few weeks ago, but said he used scissors on Sunday to remove his GPS ankle bracelet.
"I was paranoid, sir, and, you know, I got scared and stuff," Rodriguez said. "I was scared and I cut if off and that's basically what I can say right now."
Rodriguez told Spillman God told him to do the right thing and surrender to authorities.
"I was feeling suicidal at the time when I was out on the streets and stuff," he said. "And contemplating putting myself in front of a bus or hanging myself and so I know it's not the right thing to do, you know. I don't want to go to hell."
Spillman was in the neighborhood talking with residents about Rodriguez when he looked over and saw Rodriguez standing on the sidewalk.
Rodriguez said he was sorry for the crime he committed.
"It's a stigma to my soul and my mind and my heart and stuff," he said. "And I want to do the right thing, sir. That's why I'm back here."
Minutes later, sheriff's deputies showed up and arrested Rodriguez. Tampering with a GPS ankle monitor is a parole violation that will likely send him back to prison.
