< I can't find a part on the forum that handles science, or the scientific aspects of sign languages. Please, correct me if I missed it. >
Hello everybody,
I'm doing a master in Media & Knowledge Engineering to develop a visual language. Something like VIL, Bliss, MinSpeak, CD-Icon, Sanyog, Vedo-Vedi, Elephant's Memory, etcetera. (If you know of something alike, tell me.
)
Therefore I'm investigating sign languages, to collect clues about what makes a language a language. Apart for the famous paper of Bill Stokoe [Sign Language Structure] it's difficult to find what criteria are met by e.g. ASL to justify its state as 'real language'. Can anyone of you help me further? (I'm interested in the sign languages, not in the sign systems.)
For example I'd like to know if there is a difference between signing speed and speed in oral languages. If I've a few concepts or a small story; in which way can it be told faster? And if I use e.g. Valerie Sutton's SignWriting, in which way can a human 'read' faster? ASL in SignWriting symbols, or English texts?
How many words versus signs are in a typical dictionary? How many are used in a typical conversation? How fine-grained are conceptual differences between signs? Are there (online) corpora available?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Andy
