OPENING: Deaf footballer Oliver Monkfield declares the unit open

A SCHOOL with a unit for deaf youngsters is celebrating the opening of its own specialist centre.

Caterham High School has 13 hearing-impaired students who can now be taught in a better environment with improved facilities - including three teaching rooms and an audiology room.

Previously, they had received lessons in two different classrooms, and the new facilities were welcomed by teacher Lorraine Hutchins.

She said: "We have support workers and provide language and speech-based activities and the children will now get the full benefits of these."

Olympic athlete Oliver Monkfield of the Great Britain deaf football team was the guest of honour at the opening.

He told pupils about life competing in the Olympics and as a PE teacher, and answered pupils' questions.

Mrs Hutchins said: "The students were really interested in what he had to say. They didn't know much about deaf sporting teams and found out all about how they play football matches as a deaf team."

The youngsters who use the unit at the school in Caterham Avenue, Clayhall, are now set to reap the benefits, and Mrs Hutchins said: "They've all said how much better it is than before because they've got so much more space.

"They know where to go to get things like hearing aids, for example, and it really will improve the teaching for them here.
