Sara H. Tomlinson | Teacher for the deaf, 95 | Inquirer | 07/30/2007

Sara H. "Sally" Renner Tomlinson, 95, formerly of Glenside, a teacher of the hearing-impaired for 25 years, died of cancer July 7 at Normandy Farms Estates, a retirement community in Blue Bell.

Mrs. Tomlinson grew up in Mount Airy, graduated from Germantown High School, and attended Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., and the University of Pennsylvania.

From 1935 to 1941, she taught at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Germantown. Her father, Barton Sensenig, whose brother was hearing-impaired, also taught at the school.

She stopped teaching to raise a family, but after her husband, Otto W. Renner Jr., died in 1960, she went back to work to support their four children, said their son Otto 3d.

She taught hearing-impaired students at Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, and later returned to the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, where she retired in 1974.

In 1976, she married her next-door neighbor, Stanley Tomlinson. They shared a love of antiques, gardening and family gatherings. He died in 1980.

Mrs. Tomlinson was active in many organizations, including the Girl Scouts and the Unitarian Society of Germantown.

She was a competitive sportswoman, her son said, and played tennis into her 80s and pool every Saturday morning until two months ago. She was a loyal fan of Philadelphia sports teams, and loved to watch the Olympic games.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Tomlinson is survived by another son, Michael; daughters Penelope Montague and Patricia Tim; stepchildren Thomas Tomlinson and Marifrances Hiltz; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m Wednesday at Normandy Farms Estates, 9000 Twin Silo Dr., Blue Bell.
