Roller Dollz to aid deaf school | argusleader.com | Argus Leader
The Sioux Falls Roller Dollz received a different sort of applause Tuesday.
The roller derby team put on a display at the South Dakota School for the Deaf. The women are accustomed to raucous cheering for each sweaty body block and skating maneuver as they compete in other arenas. Tuesday they were more apt to see the applause.
"It's the deaf wave," said Tina Bordenave, who works on public relations for the school. "You'll see arms go up and hands wave. That's a visual clap."
The event was a warmup for a fundraiser next month. The Roller Dollz host the North Star Roller Girls on May 10 in the Expo Center. A raffle and other promotions will support the school and nonprofit projects of Communication Services for the Deaf. Bordenave, a receptionist for CSD, hoped to raise $1,500, which will help send two children to a leadership camp at Lake Lakodia near Madison.
