Rochester School for the Deaf to Zumba for Japan survivors | Events | City Living News

Students, staff and supporters at the Rochester School for the Deaf are holding a benefit ZUMBA fitness event on Tuesday April 12 from 6:30-7:30pm in the school's gym, located in the RSD Westervelt Hall education building on St. Paul Street. $5 minimum donation per person for the group Zumba workout. Zumba is a popular dance/fitness.

The event will benefit deaf Japanese earthquake/tsunami survivors. It is inspired by a recent exchange of 11th and 12th grade high school students from RSD and Tokyo Metropolitan Chou School for the Deaf(TMCSD)

The TMCSD visited RSD in January, and in February, students from Rochester School for the Deaf traveled to Tokyo. The massive earthquake and tsunami struck March 11, twelve days after the group from Rochester returned to Japan.

The disaster did not directly affect TMCSD, or any of its students and faculty who were at the school when the quake struck. It has however seriously affected many families, relatives and friends of those TMCSD students who are from the region of Japan near the quakes’ epicenter. A large number of deaf Japanese students, many from rural communities, commute to TMCSD and reside there during the week.

RSD and TMCSD student remain in contact with each other through e-mail, texting and video conferences.
