River Valley Church Tends To Deaf Evacuees - Local News Story - KHBS NW Arkansas
A River Valley church is making a difficult situation much easier for some Hurricane Gustav evacuees with special needs.
The Hands in Christ Deaf Ministry at the First Baptist Church Of Lavaca is hosting five deaf evacuees.
Church officials said they offered their services as soon as they heard evacuees would be returning to Fort Chaffee.
When they arrived, emergency workers pulled the deaf evacuees aside and church members picked them up.
The service has been a blessing for the evacuees who might not have been able to communicate otherwise, church officials said.
"You can imagine. The last time they weren't able to communicate with anyone. Their families didn't know where they were. We don't have that problem this time. It's just really been a blessing,"said Dee Mathis of Hands in Christ Deaf Ministry.
The evacuees at the church told 40/29 News they were surprised and very thankful for the church's effort.
