RIM loses latest NTP ruling, risks U.S. shutdown

It'll be a few more years before anything happens with Blackberry. You can rest assured that no Blackberries will be shut down for at least 2 to 3 years.

Why? Because the whole issue of this lawsuit is that NTP says RIM (the people who run the Blackberry service) infringed upon their patents. But guess what? The article that Richard linked to says:

He (American Technology Research analyst Rob Sanderson) also noted that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently finished reexamining eight NTP patents and issued initial rulings rejecting 100% of the claims.

That means that ALL NTP patents used in this lawsuit are NO GOOD. That means that there IS no "patent infringement" on RIM's part because there are NO patents to steal!

The reason why this isn't over yet is that NTP has the right to appeal the patents that were rejected -- and that will take a few years to sort out. Nothing else can be done until that is taken care of. In the meantime, nothing can stop RIM from selling Blackberries.
