Tuesday evening, authorities caught a break in the murder case of Darlene VanderGiesen.

VanderGiesen was last seen February 1st. And a week later, police began searching the city landfill where some of her remains were found, but Tuesday, the search expanded from Sioux Falls, to just north of Beaver Creek Minnesota. A tip call to Minnesota authorities led police to a grizzly discovery.

This afternoon, at 3:00 PM, the Sioux Falls Police Department received a call from the Rock County Minnesota Sheriff's Office. Human remains had been found in the county. Police say they believe the remains are those of Darlene VanderGiesen.

Around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, a Rock County Highway Department maintenance worker found the remains along Highway 6, a half mile north of Beaver Creek Minnesota. The partial remains were wrapped up and found in a ditch.

Sioux Falls Police Caption Dave Hull says, "Once we arrived we had the coroner up here and in looking it over it appears that we every reason to believe that these are the remains of Darlene VanderGiesen."

Kull says the conditions of the remains are what helped police connect them to VanderGiesen.

"Based on the remains that we've already recovered and what we recovered today."

Kull says there was no previous evidence that would have led authorities to search across state lines, into Minnesota. But after this find, they will continue to search the area.

"It's a very significant find and we are hopeful that we have recovered the body of Darlene," he said.

Kull says the investigation is not over but hopes today's discovery can bring the VanderGiesen family some peace.

"It gives us a lot of relief. I mean anytime that we can bring something like this to a conclusion for the family its important to us."

Captain Kull says the remains have been collected and were turned over to the Minnehaha County Coroner so that a positive Identification can be made.
