Twelve-year-old Fong Choi Shin is the only deaf child in the family who can communicate well with her parents.

Her elder brother and sister, who are also deaf, have not reached the point of easy conversation yet because Choi Shin has the advantage of studying at the KIU speech centre in Kampung Pandan.

Its headmistress Roslina Ahmad said: “KIU is a method of communicating with the deaf using eight basic hand shapes representing the consonants.

“Deaf children are often thought to be mute too but this is a common misconception. By learning KIU, a deaf child also learns to communicate through speech while parents can master the programme in a matter of days,” she explained.

The KIU speech centre is under the patronage of the National Association for the Deaf Malaysia.

Choi Shin, who has been attending school at the KIU speech centre since age five, not only holds an advantage in speech and communication over her siblings but is also able to benefit greatly from the programme.

The shy teenager, her schoolmates of different ages, KIU speech centre educators and some special guests were at the Putrajaya Marriott on Wednesday to witness a signing ceremony.

National Association for the Deaf Malaysia president Raja Datuk Seri Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah signed the MOU on behalf of the association while E-Frontline Dot Com Sdn Bhd was represented by its managing director Faizul Sofyan.

The signing ceremony also coincided with the launch of the E-Frontline Dot Com website by IT Speek sales director Hishamudin Yusof.

The information and activity portal was launched with the support of sponsors and advertisers.

According to Faizul, a portion of the revenue collected from each ad sale would be channelled to the speech centre because it was “E-Frontline’s mission statement to continuously encourage KIU in its efforts”.

A car sticker contest was also launched to generate more contributions.
