Misti Mellinger was named the Community Champion for the Deaf during a recent meeting of Quota International of Canton at the Canton Woman's Club.
Mellinger has been actively involved in the interpreting profession and the deaf community for more than 13 years. She is a member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, a national organization, as well as the Ohio Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in interpreting, Mellinger is a freelance interpreter and mother. She has national certifications in interpretation and transliteration.
She also trains hearing individuals - including Canton 911 dispatchers, Social Security staff in Stark County, schools, businesses and agencies in Tuscarawas County - in use of TTY, the telecommunications device for the deaf.
