A 76-year-old deaf man who had been missing in rural Powell County since Wednesday was found this afternoon, police said.

Gene Hackworth was found before 2 p.m. near Cat Creek Road about four miles east of Stanton, police said. That’s about two miles from his sister Betty Froman’s home, where he was staying, said Cat Creek Road resident David F. Creech.

Creech and his wife, Kathyrn, found the missing man in a creek on their 90-acre property.

“Praise the Lord, there he was on all fours, on his knees and hands, in about a foot and a half of water,” said Creech. “I assume he had fallen. His walking stick had washed off a little bit and floated off from him. He was just there with his head hanging down.

“In fact, I had to move his hat on the back of his head before he realized I was standing against him. When he looked up, the biggest pleased look come over his face.”

The Creeches helped Hackworth to their pickup truck. “We brought him to the house, sat him down. He drank a couple of glasses of water and then ate half of a ham sandwich. He was just so happy to see us.”

Emergency medical technicians checked Hackworth’s vitals at the Creech home before taking him to a Winchester hospital where his condition could be evaluated. “They were afraid he might be dehydrated,” said Stanton police officer James Watson.

Hackworth was reported missing Wednesday after he did not return from a walk. Watson estimated that some 50 people, including police and firefighters, had been searching the woods around Cat Creek Road and Chop Chestnut Ridge.
