RICHMOND social services are urging people to learn to communicate with their fellow residents who are deaf or hard of hearing, following a successful Learn to Sign Week.

And Richmond sensory services team are working with Richmond Adult Community College to encourage residents to join one of the college's British Sign Language courses.

The British Deaf Association's Learn to Sign Week ran from October 3 to 9 and is a national campaign that aims to improve communications between the deaf and hearing worlds.

Cllr Jane Boulton, Richmond upon Thames Council's cabinet member for social services and housing, said: "In the UK, around 250,000 deaf people communicate using British Sign Language, however only 120,000 hearing people can use their hands to sign.

"One in seven people have some degree of hearing loss. Some of those people will use British Sign Language as their first language. If you need to communicate with deaf people at work or socially, I urge you to consider joining the British Sign Language Course at Richmond Adult Community College.

"It is very important that members of the community are not isolated just because they have a hearing loss."

Jenny Lawrence, the Sign Language Co-ordinator at RACC added: "The colleague offers a popular range of courses to improve communications with deaf people, including BSL Level One, a Bridging course and BSL Level Two.

"In addition we run short courses in Communication Tactics, Deaf Community and Culture and Deaf Awareness. Students can also gain the foundation certificate in Deaf Studies.

"Last year over 100 students took part on one of our courses. In the future, our aim is to provide more people with the skills needed to communicate with deaf people in the borough."
