Partially blind, deaf student needs dog |KXAN.com
A community in Kyle is coming together to help a young woman find her dog. Mercedes Rogers, a 23-year-old grad student who is deaf and partially blind had bought a new retractable leash for her dog Spencer last week.
On Sunday, when Rogers went to take Spencer on a walk, she pulled open the leash but the noise startled Spencer and he took off running. Rogers was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis at the age of 13. As a result, she has lost her hearing and is blind in one eye. While Spencer is not a trained service dog for Rogers, friends say besides being her best friend, Spencer alerts her to dangers.
On Saturday, friends and neighbors gathered at Mercedes apartment complex off of Cromwell Drive to hand out fliers and search for Spencer, a very shy black and tan Schnauzer/Maltese mix.
They have now raised $600 dollars and are offering a reward for the dog's safe return. Anyone with information is asked to email LookingForSpencer@gmail.com or text to 817-713-2464.
