Pacific under tsunami threat after massive 8.8 quake strikes Chile

My BIL and his family is from Chile; Santiago and Conception to be exactly.

BIL was born in Santiago & his parents moved to Canada when he was 5 years old.

Most of the family are still in Santiago & Conception as well. I pray that my nieces & nephew's family are safe.

Oh no! Hope they are safe!

Wow, that's a big tremor....my heart goes to the folks living in a major area. I think the metro area is already prepared for the quake because a small number of deaths with a quake that big.

There is a Tsunami warning currently being put out for Hiwai'i - expected to hit there around 4pm. Also Australia and parts of Asia are also under a Tsunami warning.

I hope our members such as JClarke and JavaPride are able to get to safety if they are living on the coast.

The Tsumani will hit Hawaii at 4PM? I saw on CNN and it said coverage will start at 4PM so I thought that meant just a special. Wow! how SCARY!!!

Yes, I hope anyone including any ADers who live in the at risk areas stay safe!

Death toll currently at 122 and rising.

I've yet to find out the news, electricity and phone lines are out for 24 hours.

It's hard for everyone in this family.

My sister had the twins 3 weeks ago so it's adding on to the stress for the whole family. We want to make sure that each one of the family members (both sides) are accounted for.

:( Yeah and Chile is so near :( Our government will help the victims!
I've talked to a friend there and she says that they lost Concepción and a part of Santiago :(

Hawai'i expected to see biggest waves since 1964!!!

All shores are at risk.

JClarke is living not near coast. 100 miles (156 km) far from his place.

I hope there is only minimal damage on the shores of Hiwai'i but they are forecasting 7ft. waves. May not sound all that high, but water is very powerful.

That's pretty scary... :( My thoughts on those victims...

Wonders how the boats and ships that are in the middle of the Pacific ocean are going to do!!

What can they do?

Heard from my friend over there; he said waves will be the highest in years and get this: All utility stations are in the lowlands! He lives 1600 feet up so their house is safe but will be without utilities.

Actually in a Tsunami one of the safest places to be is out in the deepest part of the ocean. The Tsunami doesnt build up height or power until it is much closer to shore. That is why the Navy sent their fleets out to sea to protect their boats which will later be needed for rescue missions.

Now that was rather quite stupid! I bet now they probably kicking themselves in the ass!
