Let's say you have an old dresser up for sale on craigslist asking $100.

Someone looks at your ad. They're thinking to themselves "This is a nice dresser, but not at $100. I would be a buyer for $80". The person doesn't feel like making an offer. They just move on. You don't know that because no one contacted you about making a $80 offer for it.

Now, someone else sees your dresser on craigslist. They are bold enough to contact you. They make an offer of $70. You agree to sell it for $70.

Does that make you feel like you are out of some money? You know, if you listed the dresser at $90, you may have a buyer. If you listed it at $80, you may have gotten a buyer too.

You could list it as "$100 or best offer". This way people can make offers.

I think people low ball you when you say or best offer. I think there is always a better buyer out there. Just like there is always a better deal. If you spend to much time trying to find it you'll miss all the good ones right in front of you though. Just sell it for what you can get and move on to the next deal.

Exude confidence and include the word, "firm" in your write-up.

Firm is a useless word on craigslist. I hate to haggle but after many attempts at putting ads up as firm I changed to just adding 20% to what I wanted to get for the item and put it up as best offer. I also tell people in emails that ask what my lowest price is, that I only talk price in person. I use the quote. " cash talks, BS walks" tell the person that they will get the best deal if they show up with cash ready to buy...

People feel better about the deal if they get it for less than advertized.

You need to get the person physically to look at the item. you have a much better chance of making a sale that way.
This is a well known fact. car dealers do this all the time. the also try everything in the book to make the sale "today" as its a fact if you leave the dealership, the chance of you returning to actually buy a car from them is less than 20%
