Oregon Youth in Action rewards student-designed projects | Statesman Journal | statesmanjournal.com

Students from the Oregon School for the Deaf and Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility will be honored Wednesday at the State Capitol for their project proposals to Oregon Youth in Action.

They are among nine groups from throughout the state that will receive certificates and checks from Gov. John Kitzhaber to carry out their projects.

Students from OSD proposed creating a one-mile fitness trail in Salem that would be accessible to people in wheelchairs.

Students from Hillcrest proposed creating a studio for TRX, a training system that uses one’s own body weight to work on strength, balance and flexibility.

Oregon Youth in Action is an initiative designed to engage and empower youth to come up with projects that will improve the health of their communities.
