The Telegram - St. John’s, NL: Local News | Opposition questions government on intentions for School for the Deaf
The Liberal Opposition is demanding the province clarify its position on the School for the Deaf.
Roland Butler, Opposition Education Critic and MHA for the District of Port de Grave, says concerns have been raised by students attending the facility; specifically that they are being pushed into mainstream classroom in regular high schools.
Butler wants the province to commit to the school and perhaps even enhance services there by including vocational education for deaf and hard of hearing students after they graduate from high school.
“There is even a belief that government will cutback the offerings made at the school to encourage mainstreaming, or even worse, close the school altogether,” Butler says. "We need to invest in our students who have disabilities in our province. I hope that government’s push towards mainstreaming is not an attempt to lower the number of students using the school to justify its eventual closure. This would certainly be unfortunate for everyone involved."
