Budapest, February 12 (MTI) - The small opposition Democratic Forum (MDF) is proposing that communications service providers should enable the deaf to send 300 text messages a month free of charge, parliamentary group leader Karoly Herenyi said in Budapest on Sunday.

This benefit would greatly facilitate communication between the deaf and the hearing impaired without imposing any burden on the central budget or causing a major loss to service providers, Herenyi told a press conference, covered for the community by sign language interpreter Tamas Nagy, an MDF candidate in this spring's elections.

In Hungary there are about 60,000 deaf people, making up 0.6 percent of the population.

MDF faces a tough struggle in this year's election with polls indicating the party's level of support is substantially below the five percent vote threshold required for seats in the national chamber.
