MyFox Kansas City | Olathe Offers Deaf Free CO Detectors

The Olathe Fire Department will continue to offer free carbon monoxide detectors to deaf and hard-of-hearing families in Olathe while supplies last.

As cooler temperatures arrive for fall and winter, many people turn on their natural gas furnaces. Some have fireplaces working to keep their homes warm, too. But do they have a working CO detector?

CO is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. It is a by-product of incomplete combustion or burning. CO accounts for half of all fatal poisonings in the U.S. each year.

A Homeland Security grant helps fund this program as part of the 2004 ASsistance to Firefighters - Fire Prevention and Safety Program.

These special detectors alert deaf and hard of hearing people to CO by using a bright strobe light and audible alarm. The detectors simply plug into a standard wall outlet and require no special installation.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Olathe residents can apply for the program by stopping by the Olathe Fire Department's Administration facility at 1225 S. Hamilton Circle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through this Friday, Nov. 3, 2006.

To qualify, applicants must present proof of Olathe residency (utility bill stub, driver's license, etc.). Direct questions can be answered at (913) 971-7903 or the hard-of-hearing telephone line at (913) 971-6333.
