The Herald : Features: LETTERS

As a Rangers well-wisher for 60 years I am disappointed that the offensive singing of sectarian songs is still prevalent among supporters who have normal hearing. I would like to draw attention to the stress caused to people of all football clubs who are deaf but who are able to lip-read. This minority group must be especially upset when the matches are broadcast on the TV screens and every offensive word of the songs is highlighted on the lips of songsters.

In this era of digital camcorders and of deaf signage experts, at news-time productions and large public meetings, I wonder if units of camcorder experts alongside experts in sign language might visit stadiums and identify an exemplary number of offenders and punish them.

At Ibrox, where registered season tickets would identify the culprits easily, it should be possible to stamp out the songs, though it will be more difficult to police visitors.

Darryl Broadfoot drew attention this week to the conduct of Rangers supporters in Inverness but it seems to me the host teams should be responsible for security in their stadiums using police to bring prosecutions with the same type of audio-visible evidence which should not be expensive to obtain.
