Hello,

My name is Lauren. I have a profound hearing loss. We believ eis is from growing up with chronic infections and high fevers, and from being on many otoxic antibiotics. I was diagnosed at the age of 2 with a mild hearing loss. As i got older my loss worsened and I failed all of my school hearing tests. When I was 2 they diagnosed me using an OAE test. My parents have always denied my hearing loss so I never wore hearing aids. I got my first aids a year ago and heard so many sounds I never knew existed. Through the last year my loss has rapidly worsened and we think its becaus of infections and a seizure I had.

I am now considered profoundly deaf and I rely on an interpreter in school. I went to the doctor last week because my audiologist wanted me to go get checked out and to see if I might be able to get a CI. When they went I had an OAE done which I havent had done since I was 2. The ENT said that my audiogram and OAE dont match. He never looked at me when he was talking he was just typing on his computer. Has anyone ever had this happen before? Is it possible that the OAE was wrong? I just went thinking he woupd write a script for me to get more powerful aids. All I got out of him was, "your aids are useless and your ears work fine according to the OAE.

I think he thought I was making it up, but Im not. I still hear some with my aids but they just need to be a tad louder and my aids are maxed out. My aids also help a lot with my balence and awareness of whats ging on. I also have a cousin and an uncle who are haard of hearing so its not something new to our family.

Does anyone know what I should do or what could be going on?
