New world opens to deaf refugee child - Local - General - Fairfield Champion
THANKS to a $10,000 donation by Smithfield RSL Club to the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, little Dambaai Majock heard the first sound of his life last year.
After spending the early stages of his childhood in Egypt, the two-year-old arrived in Australia with his family as refugees from Sudan in May 2006.
He was diagnosed with profound hearing loss in 2007, and was recently fitted with hearing aids.
A centre spokesman said that in the next few months he will start learning to speak.
Operations manager at Smithfield RSL, Wesley Komorowski, said supporting the charity was a new innovation for the club.
