A new Wharfedale fundraising group working to provide hearing dogs to aid deaf people will make its first public appearance at a church in Ilkley on Tuesday, June 14.

A group of local volunteers has come together to raise awareness and funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Members will be holding a stall at the Christchurch coffee morning on June 14 to give information about the charity and sell merchandise.

Visitors to Christchurch, on The Grove, will also get the chance to meet Denver, one of the charity’s highly-trained hearing dogs.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a registered charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to household sounds and danger signals such as the doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm – providing life-changing independence and confidence.

Dogs are donated for training by breeders and members of the public, and when possible they are selected from rescue centres.

The charity also has its own breeding scheme.

Hearing Dogs provides a national service and no charge is made to recipients.

There are currently around 750 working hearing dogs assisting the lives of severely and profoundly deaf people across the UK. Community fundraising manager Lucy Nalton said: “All funds raised by our new Wharfedale Fundraising Group will help Hearing Dogs for Deaf People continue their work in providing the life-changing level of independence, confidence and security a hearing dog brings to a deaf person.”

The coffee morning starts at 10am.
