Deaf students will shortly benefit from a new service of sign- language-teaching in Maltese to be offered in schools.

An agreement has been reached between the Education Ministry and the Association of Deaf Persons, Education and Employment Minister Louis Galea said yesterday.

The ministry, he said, has decided to buy the services of those professionals who can offer sign-language services in class to students.

The classes will be given in Maltese sign-language.

Minister Galea said the working group on education for those with special needs had recommended that disabled children did not only require facilitators but other services that were of greater benefit such as sign-language interpretation.

There are six deaf students at MCAST who are currently attending courses with the help of an interpreter.

The minister said this service was another aspect of the government’s policy to improve educational accessibility for all.
