At the shelter where I volunteer, we got in a bunch of new dogs - several Pom's, all blond, with various 't' names <Tessy, Tessa...different dogs...> :lol: and Chi's.. and several gorgeous Bully's. One of them is a big blue boy who looks similar to this: BLUE PITBULLS | BLUE REMY| PITBULL PICTURES <scroll down a bit>
Though not QUITE as broad but very similar. He is deaf and most of the volunteers have no experience with deafness or deaf dogs.
So I went looking for this new boy yesterday worked with him outside briefly and took him into the room where we volunteers have most of our stuff - cabinet, bulletin board etc. Worked with him on intro to basic hand signals, handler awareness etc. Neat boy, fun to spend time with!:)
 
Did he learn the signals quickly? Wonder if he had had any previous training.

A dog who has had some training will usually pick up new commands more quickly than a dog who has had nothing, just because he has already "learned how to learn."

he came in as a stray...but he started throwing some Sits and some eye contact my way once he realized there was a "game" going on. Used Thumb Up for Marker/visual cue and added more facial grammar to my Thumb Up - raised eyebrows, "happy face" expression, tried to make my movements excited for him, to make any effort he made, more of a "party". Worked Recalls and added more motion and more body language than I already do with a hearing dog.

previously at one point we had a deafblind Aussie puppy <4 months> who was actually there for a very short time, happily. He was adorable.
