New Scheme To Assist Deaf (from Basingstoke Gazette)
A SERVICE offering deaf people in Basingstoke help in accessing services has been launched.
The Basingstoke Advocacy Scheme and Face Us, a project supporting deaf children and parents, have teamed up to create the Deaf Advocacy Scheme.
Advocates can assist clients when they try to deal with a service, such as phoning a utility company, claiming housing benefit or hiring a solicitor, by talking through what they want to achieve and sometimes by accompanying them, but not by providing interpretation.
Now the Basingstoke Advocacy Scheme volunteers have been trained by Face Us to allow them to work more effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
Face Us manager Gail Tong said accessing services was becoming more complex, particularly for deaf people. For example, she said, reduced appointment times give deaf people less time to complete the sometimes difficult task of communicating their point.
She added: "The scheme opens advocacy up for deaf people."

"Before the launch, we had deaf people coming to us, so we are already getting referrals. We know there is a need in the Basingstoke area."
