KSBI-TV - Oklahoma News Tonight - New Resource For Deaf Children

On Friday, Governor Brad Henry signed House Bill 1546 into law at a ceremonial signing.

Supporters of the project were also there at the capitol to celebrate the creation of the new project. It officially started on Monday.

The law creates a lab school for deaf education and speech pathology students. Plus, the new program will also benefit parents in other ways.

Jody Harlan, with the Department of Rehabilitation Services, says, "These parents can keep there little ones at home and get an outstanding education by the deaf experts in the state."

John Clipp is a parent of a deaf child. He says, "It will teach him how to talk, the school is great. They'll teach him the vocalization and he'll be able to catch up with other three year old children. I think it's a great bill."

The new program is for students ages two through kindergarten. The hope is it will accommodate students through third grade in future years.

Good to see that more early intervention programs are being mandated, but I would certainly be more excited at the prospect if it included sign and the D/deaf community. Again, the focus is all on "teach him to talk", not teach him to communicate! And what about teaching parents what they need to know, rather than expecting it all to come from the child?
