New partnership serving deaf and hard of hearing Vermonters

The Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the Deaf Vermonters Advocacy Services (DVAS) jointly announced today that they are forming a new partnership in service to people who are deaf or hard of hearing in Vermont.

“For many years, the Vermont Network has collaborated with DVAS to serve survivors of domestic and sexual violence who are deaf or hard of hearing,” said Vermont Network Executive Director Karen Tronsgard-Scott. “We have always had the deepest respect for the advocacy provided by DVAS and our member programs have worked closely with DVAS advocates to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing survivors’ needs are met within Vermont’s communities.”

In 2011, DVAS provided advocacy services statewide to 45 deaf and hard of hearing survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

“As a new program of the Vermont Network, DVAS will continue its services to all signing and non-signing deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, deaf-blind individuals to enhance awareness and education about crimes and domestic and sexual abuse,” said DVAS Director and Trainer Keri Darling. “Our mission is to enrich the lives of people with hearing loss by providing access to services, education and advocacy.”

As the statewide leader of the movement to end domestic and sexual violence, the Vermont Network, in collaboration with its member programs, is the collective voice for social change on behalf of domestic and sexual violence survivors.

“We are delighted and excited about our new partnership with DVAS and look forward to building our capacity for understanding how best to serve survivors who are deaf or hard of hearing,” said Tronsgard-Scott.
