PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - There was a daring rescue in Prairieville Monday, as one man hustled to alert his neighbors that their home was on fire. The family of six was sleeping soundly as their home went up in flames.
The fire itself wasn't the hero's biggest challenge. The owners couldn't hear the fire alarm going off because they are deaf. Luckily, three of the four children can hear, and that may have been the difference between life and death for the family.
Tad Continey's rude awakening at about 3:00 a.m. may have saved his neighbors' lives. The fire left the home of the Lefors family badly charred. The entire back section of the house suffered damage. Continey says he repeatedly banged on the front door. Six-year-old Keva heard the commotion as she lay on the floor in her parents' bedroom. Every member made it out alive, but their home and what remains inside are ruined.
Nine-year-old Alec's room got some of the worst damage, but buried beneath the rubble was a little boy's love for the home team. Clumps of insulation now line the living room floor. The hallways are filled with soot and their kitchen was drenched. The mother and father are simply grateful that everyone made it out safely. Firefighters believe a heating lamp used to warm the family's doghouse may have caused the fire.
